The "Token Money" Trap

You visit a property (or are shown fake videos of one) and the person claims that 5 other people are ready to take it. They pressure you to transfer "Token Money" immediately to "lock" the room, promising that it is 100% refundable if you don't like it. But when you ask for a refund, they vanish.

How to avoid: Never pay token money without physically visiting the property, meeting the actual owner, and getting a written receipt or rental agreement draft.

The Fake Owner Trick

Some scammers rent an Airbnb or a cheap room for a day, pose as the "owner," and take hefty security deposits from multiple students in a single weekend. By Monday, the real owner arrives, and the scammer is gone with everyone's money.

How to avoid: Always ask for the owner's ID and electricity bill (which should match the name on the ID) before transferring any security deposit.
